'95 Red Burgundy Tasting - Thursday, Mar 5, 1998 Results of a '95 Burgundy tasting at Hi-Time Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA. Being poured, were two flights of 9 wines each at $35 per flight. I opted for one of the flights of 9, however these notes include a 10th wine (lucky me, I got an accidental pour from the other flight), plus a '92 Rochioli Pinot tasted later in the evening. The wines, in the order tasted: '95 Daniel Bocquenet, Vosne Romanee - $33.99 Light ruby-purple color. Nose of strawberry, black cherry, with hints of wild cherry, smoke, and stems. Strawberry, cherry, and a bit of earth. Light medium mouthfeel, slightly bitter initially, but clean long finish. Aroma score: B+ '95 Geantet - Pansiot, Chambolle Musigny - $39.99 Light purple ruby color. nose of jammy, candied fruit, cola, and black cherry. Young narrow fruit. Big initial mouthfeel, but the fruit seems a bit "green." Slightly bitter and quick finish. Aroma score: A '95 Pascal Bouley, Pommard - $44.99 Light purple ruby, with bright and uniform color. Somewhat restrained nose of strawberry and cherry, with notes of game and earth. Nice! Young, slightly sweet and expansive fruit, meaty quality to mouthfeel. Clean long finish. Aroma score: A- '95 Andre Cathiard, Vosne Romanee "Les Malconsorts" - $49.99 Light ruby, hint of purple. Somewhat warmcolor, with some heavy viscosity. Nose of strawberry and orange pekoe tea, with hints of stems, candied fruit and anise. Meaty and smooth, lovely mouthfeel. Clean and crisp, very nice, though slightly bitter, medium long finish. Aroma score: A '95 Joseph Roty, Gevrey-Chambertin "Brunelle" - $49.99 Light and bright purple ruby color. Nose of strawberry, black cherry, anise, and cola flavors. Crisp and acidic, yet not at all excessive. Young mouthfeel. Fleshy, stemmy and slightly tannic right now, time should reward this well. Aroma score: A- '95 Geantet - Pansiot, Priemer Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin "Le Poissenot" - $49.99 Medium pruple ruby color. Whoa! Burgundy alert, here! Massive, jammy strawberry and raspberry fruit. Complex notes of cola, anise, black cherry, and wild cherry. Sweet nose, and not the least bit subtle. Fleshy, stemmy, and slightly bitter mouthfeel. Young, and huge, yet smooth and delectable as well. Somewhat stemmy and earthy long finish. Aroma score: A+ '95 Robert Chevillion, Nuit-Saint-Georges "Roncieres" - $49.99 Medium purple ruby, with a dark core and a watery edge. Stunning! A huge, huge dense nose of strawberry, raspberry, and black cherry. Smooth and fleshy mouthfeel, with flavors of strawberry, and black cherry, and hints of pepper and meat. Aroma score: A+ '95 Georges Lignier, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru - $44.99 Warm ruby color, with hint of purple. Slightly restrained nose of candied fruit and strawberry. Very nice, smooth, fleshy and easy mouthfeel. Very seductive and warm mouthfeel. Aroma score: A- '95 Haegelen-Jayer, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru - $89.99 Warm medium ruby color. Nose of cola, candied strawberry and raspberry fruit, fleshy and slightly gamey. Very nice. Tart, yet very fruity with big feel on palate. Young mouthfeel, and slightly higher in acid than I prefer. Aroma score: A '95 Mongeard-Mugneret, Echezeaux Grand Cru - $59.99 Light purple ruby color. Smoky, earthy, stemmy and fleshy strawberry nose. Huge and dense. Chewy, young, big mouthfeel. Long somewhat stemmy finish that is full and lush. Aroma score: A- '92 Rochioli, Russian River Valley - $59.99 Warm ruby garnet color, with a touch of orange hue at the edge. Nose of lightly smoky strawberry, with a hint of tea and wood, along with a sense of some residual tartness. Nice, slightly sweet fruit in the mouth, belying the seeming tartness in the nose. Finish is slightly stemmy, with a good crisp bite at the end. Aroma score: B+ ___________________ Overall impressions: I don't go to many Burgundy tastings, but I was pleasantly rewarded by attending this one. Considering that Burgundy pricing is less than wallet-friendly, opportunities such as this offer a chance to taste the wines without getting caught up in experimenting with Burgundy's appellations and producers. No big surprises here, although I really hadn't had any particular
expectations. It was a nice lineup, and as it turned out, I was accidently
poured an additional taste - one from the other flight. Here is my relative ranking, by tier and in order of preference, of the wines tasted. '95 Geantet - Pansiot, Priemer Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin "Le Poissenot"
- $49.99
