dark ruby garnet color. Massive nose of cassis, anise, mint, toast,

smooth and long finish. '96 Caymus - Napa Valley. $69.99. Dark ruby garnet color.
Nose of toast, anise, and cassis. Absolutely textbook! Medium mouthfeel,
lots of fruit and toast, with just a touch of tartness. Hey, it's
a real nice $35-40 wine! '95 Shafer Hillside Select - Stags Leap. approx.$110.99.
Extremely dark purple garnet color. Nose of shoe polish, anise, cassis,
and blackberry. Sweet fruit, somewhat dryingon the palate. The fruit's
appearance seems slightly brief, rather that ever-present, but th
ewine has quite a chew. Some bitterness and aspirin-like quality to
the extended finish. ___________________ Overall impressions: an interesting selection of wines, with several new "faces." There was also quite a range in price, with the "...if we had it - this is what it'd cost" Shafer topping out at $110. It was a nice enough wine, but several others at 1/3 the cost showed better -- at least today. It's the same old thing for Arrowood, they just keep pumping out fabulous juice. The really tasty Whitehall Lane Reserve was a nice surprise. Both the Caymus and the Fisher efforts scored highest for aromas, but the taste/mouthfeel of each wine didn't quite measure up to the fantastic noses. In the under $25 category, both the Rocking Horse and the
Gallo Frei are very good wines at very affordable prices. And
at $12, the Quintana makes a better-than-quaffer wine for a
quaffer price. Here is my relative ranking, by tier and in order of preference, of the wines tasted. '96 Arrowood - Sonoma Co. $32.99.
