Tasting notes on five wines from Eno Wines, Wednesday, May 5, 2004. The wines were tasted in a single non-blind flight over a period of six hours. The '01s are current releases and were from 750ml bottles. The '02s samples were from 375ml bottles, and will probably be released in Fall '04.

Overall impressions: each of these wines were very good to excellent, with the 2002 Syrah my favorite. Looking for both smaller unknown vineyards, in addition to well-established sources seems to be something that Sasha Verhage prefers. He certainly has done a very nice job with these wines, from sourcing to winemaking to the labeling graphics.

Tasting Notes
2002

2001 Eno Zinfandel - Teldeschi Vnyd, Dry Creek Valley. $18
Medium ruby garnet color. Nose of wild strawberry and tea, with a nice spicy raspberry streak and a touch of old-vine scent. Moderately full in mouthfeel, with very nice strawberry and raspberry fruit, excellent balance and a smooth long finish. Very "claret-like" in style, this Zin is more about balance.
Production: 60 cases.

2001 Eno Zinfandel - Damas Vnyd, Fiddletown. $14.
Medium-dark garnet color. Bigger in the nose than the Teldeschi version, showing riper fruit, with more boysenberry and bramble qualities. Full in mouthfeel, with nice texture and weight, plenty of fruit, excellent balance and a very long slightly gripping finish. The name here is a homage to the small town of Fiddletown. Production: 50 cases.

Behind the Label

Eno wines' proprietor and winemaker Sasha Verhage has been making small batches of wine since 1999. His amateur wines have been medal finishers at a multitude of Fairs and competitions, and for the past few years he has apprenticed under Tom Leaf, of Grape Leaf Cellars. Sasha has also taken a number of winemaking and viticulture courses at UC Davis, and has traveled to Italy, Australia, and many California wineries to research winemaking techniques.

Producing handmade wines from premium vineyards, Eno is making high quality wines from established vineyards, or those with great potential. The wine making techniques are based on minimal intervention, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Vineyard Sources:

Ray Teldeschi's meticulous vineyard is nestled in the heart of Dry Creek Valley. His head pruned vines date back over 115 years ago. Old vine field selections were taken to plant a new selection. UC Davis recognized this vineyard by archiving in ZAP's Heritage Zinfandel project. This vineyard has sourced fruit for many well-known wineries , such as Ridge, Ravenswood, and upcoming producers like Carlisle and Grape Leaf Cellars.

The Damas Vnyd is planted of an Amador Countyon hillside volcanic soil, overlooking the famous Eschen Vnyd. (Ridge made a single vineyard designate from Eschen in the 1970's).

2002 Eno Pinot Noir - Morelli Lane Vnyd, Russian River Valley.
Dark ruby color. Beautiful nose of black cherry, perfume, and floral aromas. Full mouthfeel, lots of lovely cinnamon-scented dark fruit, with touches of red fruit and spice. Smooth and seductive on the palate, with excellent balance and long finish.

2002 Eno Zinfandel - Teldeschi Vnyd, Dry Creek Valley.
Medium-dark ruby garnet color. Rich nose of dark fruit and spices, with a faint touch of licorice in the background. More full-throttle in mouthfeel than the '01 version, with lots of strawberry and boysenberry flavors, and a nice spiciness throughout the long finish. Slightly over 16% in alcohol, but this wine wears it very well.

2002 Eno Syrah - Casatierra Vnyd, Fiddletown.
Dark ruby color. Fabulous nose of blackberry compote, roasted coffee, glove leather, and anise seed. Rich and full mouthfeel, plenty of dark fruit, with tar and licorice accents, excellent balance, and a smooth long finish.
