2004 GREEN VALLEY SYMPOSIUM - SEBASTAPOL, CA - This symposium, held April 26, 2004, was hosted by many of the growers and wineries of the Sonoma County's Green Valley appellation, to focus attention to this small premium wine-producing area.

Tasting Notes - Dutton Ranch

1998 Iron Horse Brut Rose. Very nice yeasty strawberry nose and mouth. Crisp and fleshy.

2003 Iron Horse Rose of Pinot. Lots of rose and violet notes work well with the strawberry nose and mouth. Very nice.

2001 Marimar Torres Chardonnay. Sweet citrus flavor and aroma, crisp, excellent balance, lots of fruit.

2001 Sebastapol Vnyds Chardonnay. A touch more oak than the Torres, with nice smoky and toasty notes, slightly soft in balance and finish.

2001 Hartford Court Chardonnay - Sonoma Coast. Big and rich, smooth on the palate, crisp and toasty.

2001 Dutton-Goldfield Chardonnay. Fruit-filled, smoky and toasty nose, smooth in mouthfeel, delicious long finish. Kind of a combination of the Sebastapol and Hartford.

2002 Tandem Pinot Noir - Keefer. Candied black cherry - intense nose, lightly sweet mouthfeel, very rich. Beautiful!

2002 Orogeny Pinot Noir - Green Valley. Somewhat sweet nose of rose petal and cherry, with a nice smoky component

2002 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir - Dutton Ranch. Crisp and delicious, with lots of strawberry flavors.

2002 Marimar Torres Pinot Noir. Lots of earthy flavors, crisp mouthfeel, bit of oak and heat noted. (Could just be bottle variation, because this was one of my favorites in the late morning seminar.)

2002 Sebastapol Vnyds Pinot Noir. Very well balanced, nose and mouth are somewhat in the Orogeny style, but a little nicer. Fruit falls off a bit on the long finish.

2002 Hartford Court Pinot Noir - Sonoma Coast. Earthy and lightly stemmy, very full and firm on the back end, picks up a bit of heat.

2001 Sebastapol Vnyds Syrah. Smooth, slightly soft, very voluptuous on the palate.

2002 Hartford Court Zinfandel - Russian River. Wow! loads of in-your-face boysenberry fruit, smooth and delicious.

2002 Dutton-Goldfield Zinfandel - Morelli. Very smooth, even more boysenberry than the Hartford Court. Very, very nice.

Welcome BBQ: Sunday April 25th.
This setting offered a chance for each of us to get acquainted. The Dutton family opened up their ranch and hosted a welcoming BBQ for all 60 of us. Not surprisingly, in addition to the fabulous food there were also more than a few wines present.

Tasting: Monday April 26th.
After a luncheon of tapas and paella at Marimar Torres Estate, the buses took us a new vineyard site for goldridgepinot Vineyards. No sooner had we departed the buses, than hayfever decided to claim my nose. Hence, the brief notes below.

Tasting Notes - goldridgepinot

Martinelli Pinot Noir - Big and rich, fabulous nose and mouthfeel.

Keegan Pinot Noir - Big framework, with moderately high acids.

Walker Station Chardonnay - Exceedingly smooth, very nice.

Dutch Bill Creek Pinot Noir - Big - almost jammy. Spicy dark fruit, very nice balance.

Tasting Notes - Hartford Court

2001 Marimar Torres Chardonnay. Fruit, touch of butter, very rich with the dish, with excellent balance and finish.

2001 Hartford Court - Laura's. Very nice, and slightly better with the dish - greater crispness that worked well with the lobster.

2001 Dutton-Goldfield Chardonnay - Rued. Lots of floral and minerality. Nearly a riesling quality in the nose and mouth. Fruiter.

------------------------------------

2001 Marimar Torres Pinot Noir. Fruit seemed to get a bit bitter with this dish.

2001 Sebastapol Vnyds Pinot Noir - Jewel Block. Very complimentary to the dish. Very nice.

2001 Hartford Court Pinot Noir - Arrendell. I liked this wine best with the pan seared chicken. Beautiful fruit!

------------------------------------

2002 Orogeny Pinot Noir - Green Valley. My second favorite in this flight, it complimented the lamb nicely, almost adding some sweetness to the wine.

2002 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir - Sanchietti. My favorite with the lamb. Excellent balance - very tasty, lovely long finish.

2002 Hartford Court Pinot Noir - Arrendell. Possibly too young, the fruit seemed to stay hidden, just peeking out now and then.

------------------------------------

1999 Iron Horse Russian Cuvee. Lovely, excellent accompaniment.

1995 Hartford Port . Beautiful, smooth and silky.
