Pretty frazzled today so not much from the bloody pulpit:
The Seghesios...... a long old-time Sonoma winemaking family. I used to really dislike their wines.... old-Calif style of winemaking a la Foppiano/Martini/ Pedroncelli.... rather unclean/bretty... not much richness or extract... but they always were cheap!! I kept reading about how Seghesio Wnry was on a comeback trail and improving quality of their wines. Over the last 2-3 yrs, I've seen a rather slow but steady improvement, but their Zins (any of them) still did not inspire me to buy any. This new release of wines ARE a dramatic step up in quality; the OV Zin I will buy when it comes to NM. They have some great old vnyds up there.. it's going to be exciting to follow their continued improvements, especially w/ the Italian varietals.
The Sierra Vistas..... they last few yrs, John & Barbera MacCready have been quietly ratcheting up the quality of their wines. Their '95 5* Reserve Zin was (is) terrific. But this 5* Reserve Cab was a dynomite wine (and I don't much care for Cabs)... their best wine I can recall and, therefore, the best ElDorado wine I've ever had. A bit like SantaCruzMtn Cab, a bit like WashState Cab, a lot like Bordeaux Cab. NOT like Napa Cab!!
The Martinelli JackAss Vineyard Zin..... this was poured at ZAP in January & a lot of people did NOT like this wine at all. I liked it at ZAP and liked it even more here. But it is a very different/weird/eccentric Zin and has to be approached with an open mind. I think it's going to be quite a good wine down the road with some age.
WildHog Vineyard.... I've only had a few of their wines, but have been mightly impressed with the, Need to find out more about them.
In response to a recent newspaper article quoting me as glibly dismissing Merlot as "simple, fruity, and one-dimensional"; Howard Sherry brought the Matanzas Creek Merlot in a blatent attempt to humiliate & disgrace me afore my group as a mystery wine. Unfortunately, it's been done too many times before. I was totally clueless on this wine, convinced it was some sort of Syrah, probably French. Terrific Merlot, so Howard wins this round!!

And no Zinfandel notes are complete w/o a bloody pulpit:
