The Sta. Rita Hills
Winegrowers Alliance held its inaugural Wine & Fire event on June 9, 10 and 11, 2006. The
festivities began on Friday evening with a reception at the restored La Purisima Mission. Over two dozen winemakers poured library wines and current releases from the Sta Rita Hills appellation, accompanied by wood fired artisanal pizzas from American Flatbread of Los Alamos. People mingled until dusk, after which, we took our seats in the Mission's sancuary for a private screening of the wine documentary, “From Ground to Glass”, featuring California winemakers, including local luminaries: Richard Sanford, Chuck Ortman, Jim Clendenen, and Ken Brown, as well as the likes of Warren Winiarski, Joel Peterson and Paul Draper. A nice nod was given to a couple of up-and-coming winemakers including Wes Hagen and Mike Sinor. The film was directed, written & photographed by Robert DaFoe.
Saturday consisted of 4 tasting seminars, held in a secluded canyon, where winemakers discussed their particular approach to Chardonay and Pinot Noir. And the day was capped by a huge BBQ lunch. Thankfully, GrapeRadio was there for the entire weekend to get interviews with winemakers and attendees, so stay tuned for our shows.
