Champagne
region - France
Bottles resting in the
cellar of Champagne Salon
(left). Visits to the
Champagne region of France,
including Roger Coulon,
Salon, Taittinger, Philliponnat,
Duval Leroy, Ruinart,
Pommery, Jaquesson, and
others. The appellation
of Champagne was created
by decree in 1908, which
specified an area that
would be entitled to use
the appellation Champagne.
A combination of northern
climate, deep chalk sub-soils,
and the way in which the
grape vines are planted
on slopes accounts for
the region's "terroir." |

Walla Walla - Washington
Large
rocks surround the base
of the vines in a vineyard
in Washington's Walla
Walla AVA, at left. The
Walla Walla Valley actually
stradles two states, Washington
and Oregon, and is home
to
more than 100 wineries
are operating in the valley
and more than 1,500 acres
of vineyards. Soils of
varying combinations of
loan, silt, loess, and
cobbles delivered by a
series of tremendous floods
thousands of years ago,
and the area still shows
signs of this amid a sea
of wheat farming. |

Scenes from Honfleur, France
This historic port on the estuary of the Seine was founded in the middle of the 12th century. Honfleur became an embarkation point for goods from Rouen to England. One of the most picturesque ports in France, characterized by high-houses with slate-covered exteriors. Sainte Catherine's Quay at the center of town is especially beautiful, having been painted many times by artists, including impresionists Claude Monet and Eugène Boudin. |
